Pete’s Cycling Dudes Guidelines

My concept of the Cycling Dudes was to form a group that would enjoy a weekly recreational ride with no regulations.
However the group is now getting unwieldy so please adhere to the following guidelines

1) We will not be adding any new members. It is still OK to bring visiting family or friends for a day of cycling

2) Leaders & sweeps will need to stay in touch by cell phone. I am guilty of not keeping my phone handy

3) we are fortunate to have Conrad leading shorter less strenuous rides. Conrad knows every city street & township road so his rides are always interesting. Many of our main routes were introduced by Conrad in the early stages of the Cycling Dudes.

4) We need to evaluate on own physical condition & limitations to avoid medical emergencies in the counrtyside. Do not hesitate to ride with Conrad if you have any doubts about completing a ride. Most of the regulars ride several times a week in order to stay in cycling condition

5) There will be a $5 fee for a backyard lunch after a Wed ride

6) Remember to pay your driver $5 when you are car pooling

July 1 2015 Ride to Lakefield

July 1
Several Dudes did meet in Beavermeade at 10:00 for a ride to Lakefield on an overcast Canada Day. Pete Gardner sent this photo

Cycling Dues shirts reminder
Go to WildRock for a size fitting before ordering your shirt. Tanya suggested that this would be a good opportunity for anyone to order a 2nd shirt. A few of us have 2 shirts

Ride from Lakefield to Young’s Pt thru Douro Twp

30 cyclists met in the Lakefield municipal parking lot beside the arena on a pleasant summer day. Conrad Hill led 6 cyclists on a route thru & around Lakefield followed by lunch at The thirsty Loon. Pete MacLoghlin led 23 cyclists on a 40 km ride to Young’s Pt. From the parking lot we rode up Strickland St a long gradual climb before a downhill run across Hgw 28 to Lynch’s Rock Rd & east then south to Cedar Cross Rd. East on Cedar Cross to the T-intersection at Payne Line Rd taking a short jog north to Oke Rd & east to Cty Rd 4. the roads from Lynch’s Rock Rd to Cty Rd 4 are gravel surfaced. Continued north On Cty Rd 4 up a hill past Warsaw caves to Bethel Chuch at the intersection of Cty Rd 6. Cycled west on Cty Rd 6 to Camp Line Rd & north to Birchview Rd. Then west on Birchview beside Clear Lk to Hgw 28 & north to the Old Bridge Inn in Young’s Pt for lunch on the patio. After lunch cycled south on Hgw 28 to the Douro 4th line & south to Cty Rd 6 then west across Hgw 28 & into Lakefield. Another option is turn east from Cty Rd 6 onto the Douro 5th Line which takes you back to Strickland St. While it is not a demanding route it does have a few “rollers” which you can expect on almost any countryside route in Peterborough Cty!  We had 2 unfortunate incidents today. The 1st was a flat rear tire on Oke Rd which took a bit of time to repair but the 2nd more serious one was that Dan Volman collapsed while waiting for the flat tire group to catch up at Bethel Church. An ambulance was called & as the flat tire group approached we were startled to see the flashing red lights. Dan was taken to PRHC for observation & tests, the diagnosis was syncope (fainting) due to dehydration & fatigue. Thankfully he is home & has fully recovered. After the ride Peter Hamley, Burton McClelland & Mike Wood drove Dan’s truck to pick up his bike before driving it back to Dan’s home near Cavan.

Ennismore ride - June 17 2015

28 cyclists including Pete Gardner’s brother Tim met in Rotary Park beside Chemung Lk at the west end of the causeway on an ideal day for cycling.  Pete MacLoghlin & Jim McIntosh led (or tried to lead!) 20 cyclists on 35 km ride while Conrad Hill led the rest on a 25 km ride by taking a shorter route.  From Rotary Pk we all cycled uphill on Yankee Line to Tara Rd. Cycled north on Tara past The Quarry Golf Club into Ennismore. Then west on Ennis Rd which has a short hill climb past the Tamarac Golf Club to Boundary Rd. North on Boundary which for another hill climb with a view of Pigeon Lk as you ride down to Skyline Rd & east to Inniscara Rd where we seperated. Conrad's group continued to ride east on Edendeery Rd (the continuation of Skyline) while Jim led the others north on Inniscara to Kerry Rd cycling east across Cty Rd 16 (Tara) to Youngs Cove on Buckhorn Lk before returning to Edenderry where we met Conrad’s group. Rode west to Robinson Rd then south to Listowel Line (Cty Rd 17) & a short jog east to Brick Rd then south to Ennis Rd where the 2 groups split to meet at Jesse’s. Jim led a ride east on Ennis Rd to Ennismore Waterfront Pk on Chemung Lk returning on Ennis to Brick, south to Skyline Rd, west to Tara Rd & south to Jesse’s (292-9175) where we were served lunch in a private dining area

June 10 2015 - Ride from Beavermeade to Lang

We had 28 cyclists turn out for today’s ride. Conrad Hill, Mel Johnson & Bill Punt took turns leading 8 cyclists on a route thru the city. Barry Diceman led 20 cyclists on a route out to Lang. From Beavermeade we cycled east on Ashburham Dr past the LiftLock uphill to Old Norwood Rd. then east across Television Rd up 3 moderate hill climbs to Harold Town Park contiuing east to Sweeney Line on which we cycled north to Division Rd. Then east on Division up another hill before a downhill ride across Hgw 28 to Jermyn Line. South on Jermyn to Hgw 7 & a short jog east to David Fife Rd. South on David Fife across the Indian R to River Rd which takes you past Hope Mill as you ride into Lang. We cycled out of Lang on Allandale Rd to Nelson Rd & south to the PHTCT which took us back to Peterborough for lunch at The Porch & Pint (705-750-0598). Dark storm clouds that started to appear as were cycling on the TCT produced a deluge of rain as we approached the Old Keene Rd & lasted until we were inside The Porch & Pint where we were reunited with Conrad’s group who just missed the rain. This 45 km ride thru the undulating Douro countryside does have several moderate hill climbs until you cross Hgw 7 to enter Otonabee Twp where the terrain flattens out, at least on this route!

June 3 2015 - Peter Hamley’s Oshawa Trails Ride

We had 26 cyclists turn out for this spectacular 50 km ride on the Oshawa area trails. From Peter’s home we rode to The Harmony Creek Trail a beautiful tree lined trail which takes you south towards Hgw 401. After exiting this trail Peter led us on several streets over Hgw 401 to the Second Marsh Trail then down to the Waterfront Trail in Lakeshore Park where we started to cycle beside Lake Ontario west to the Ontario Shores Mental Health Centre in Whitby. The trail is one continuous parkland taking you thru wetlands & around Whitby harbour. After cycling around the lakeside grounds of the Mental Health Centre we returned on the Waterfront Trail to Lakeshore Park where we cycled north on the Oshawa Creek to Teddy’s for lunch. After lunch cycling on a combination of trails & city streets we returned to Peter’s home around 3:00 pm. Burton’s & the blog photos illustrate the gorgeous scenery during  this ride.
